College Scholarship

A college education is highly valued in society today. Although, there are people who manage to become successful without formal college training, the fact remains that a college degree will an individual get the best possible start in the 'real world'.

With all the acclaim associated with getting a college degree, it would be ideal to assume that it should be available to everybody. Sadly, it isn't so. College opportunities can be expensive and not everyone can afford it. There are, however, certain institutions, schools and groups recognize the necessity of a college degree. These are also the elements that can help deserving students attend college despite of the lack of financial means.

Scholarship

College scholarships are financial aides and grants given to students based on certain criteria. They provide a way for students to get a college degree even if they do not have the finances to do it themselves.

The most common kind of college scholarship awarded nowadays is the undergraduate scholarship. This is granted to students who are attending college in order to get a first and sometimes a second degree. There are of course, grants that are awarded to students who want to pursue graduate studies after college.

Types

College scholarships in general are given to candidates who meet a criterion set by the awarding institution. These can come in several forms.  The most common forms of college funding awarded to students include:

  • Institutional
  • Merit
  • Need
  • Sociology

Institutional College Scholarships are those awarded by institutions (i.e. universities, colleges) to students who are planning to attend that institution. Merit college scholarships are those given to students who have shown exceptional athletic, artistic, and academic abilities. The largest scholarship money awarded is usually merit based. Need based grants are given to students who have expressed financial difficulty. Sociology based college scholarships are awarded based on criteria such as race, gender, religion, and country of origin.

Most of these college scholarships are awarded with no-strings-attached. There are, however, some that have a 'bond' requirement between the scholar and the institution giving out the scholarship.
